At first, Surrell didn't see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors' home. He and his wife were just having a dinner in their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they heard someone screaming, “The house is on fire!” He went to investigate. That's when he saw two women and a girl crazily at a loss on their porch (走廊). It was his neighbor's house.
“The baby's inside there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called,Surrell, then , instinctively(本能地) ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara Roberts, who always called him Uncle Surrell. She was the woman's granddaughter and a playmate of Surrell's three youngest kids, 8, 10, and 12. The other two on the porch were Tiara's aunt and cousin.
Entering the burning house was like running into “a bucket of black paint”. The thick smoke caused Surrell to walk blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible for him to breathe. He felt his throat and lungs burned, and every blink stung(蛰) his eyes. The conditions would have been very dangerous for anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(慢性阻塞性肺病) and was in hospital just half a year ago, they were life-risking. After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house searching but in vain, he ran outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara”
he asked desperately.
“The second floor,” her aunt shouted back.
Surrell knew he couldn't hold his breath for long. So he uttered a little prayer, “Well, God, this is it. You got to help me, because I'm not coming out without that little girl.”
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150词左右;
Paragraph 1:
Taking a deep health, he went in a second Paragraph 2:
Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later. _______________________________ 【
在阅读文本时,我们要带着when (having a dinner)、where (Surrell's neighbor's home, the second floor, hospital)、who (Surrell, Tiara, Tiara's Grandmother and Tiara's relatives)、what (Fire broke out and Tiara was trapped on the second floor)、why (The house was on fire and the house was full of heavy smoke, Tiara's grandmother and her relatives were crazily at a loss)、how (Surrell dashed into the burning house to save Tiara)去理清文本的内容和故事情节的发展脉络。
时空线:at first having a dinner, Tiara's grandmother's house on fire, the second floor, hospital。
Surrell, Tiara, uncle, smoke, burned, lungs,
dangerous, hospital, outside, the second floor。
Surrell, Tiara hospital, outside, the second floor Plot development故事情节发展uncle, smoke, burned, lungs, dangerous 3
Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later.可知,Surrell在救护Tiara过程中受伤住院了,结合续写第一段首句“Taking a deep health, he went in a second time.
Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later.
Q1: Did Surrell succeed in saving Tiara How
Q2: What had happened to Surrell And what about Tiara
Q3: What might be Tiara's grandmother and her relatives' reaction?
Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The house was full of smoke. He ran in the dark, and finally made it to the second floor. He could hardly breathe. “Tiara, where are you”
he cried. All he could hear was the sound of burning wood. Then a screaming cry, calling Uncle Surrell, came. He quickly crawled toward the sound. Finally, he touched
4
something. It was Tiara. He pulled her on his back and said, “I've got you.” He ran out of the burning house, but he fell on the ground of the porch
在第2段的写作中,围绕段首句“Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later.”
Q1. What did Surrell find when he woke up What did he ask
Q2. What might Tiara/Tiara's grandmother have said and done in the hospital when she/they went to visit Surrell
Q3. What might be Surrell's reaction to Tiara's/Tiara's grandmother's gratitude
Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later. When he woke up, he first cared about Tiara's safety. On hearing Tiara was all right, he smiled, coughing. Having suffered severe burns, he spent another two weeks in the hospital. Tiara recovered soon and was released from the hospital after two days. She went to visit Surrell, telling him stories and singing to him songs she learned from school. “Thank you for saving my life,Uncle Surrell.” Surrell sat up, patting her shoulder. “It's a small price to pay and it's my pleasure to do that. You are my angel.” Surrell said in a low voice.
The smoke made it impossible for him to see the surroundings and he felt his way on the second floor, calling Tiara his lovely girl desperately and repeatedly.
It was so dark inside that it was hard to find the stairs. Several minutes later, he found the way and got to the second floor, where the flame was more fierce.
“Tiara, where are you” he shouted desperately, waiting for the response hopefully. Fortunately, a soft but hopeful voice emerged. “Uncle, Surrell, I'm in my
bedroom.” Without thinking twice, he dashed towards the bedroom, crashed into the door and carried the little girl outside.
With all his strength, Surrell carried the little girl in his arms and rushed out of the house, and this was the last thing he remembered.
“Thank you for saving my life, my dear uncle.”Tiara said in a sweet voice, kissing him on the cheek.
Seeing Surrell, Tiara's grandmother couldn't hold back her tears of gratitude. “Thank you, Surrell. Without your timely rescue, my granddaughter would have died in the fire.” She said, holding his hand tightly.

Looking at the little girl he rescued, he felt that all he did was worth it. 参1: Paragraph 1:
Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The house was full of
heavy smoke. The smoke made it impossible for him to see the surroundings and he just felt his way, calling Tiara his lovely girl repeatedly. “Tiara, where are you”
he cried desperately. But all he could hear was the popping of burning wood. Just at moment, a soft but hopeful voice came. “Uncle,Surrell, I'm in my bedroom.” Without thinking twice, he dashed towards the bedroom, crashed into the door, pulled the little girl up and carried her outside. That was the last thing he remembered.
Paragraph 2:
Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later. As he woke up, what he first cared about was Tiara's safety. Hearing Tiara was all right, he smiled, coughing and nodding. Having suffered severe burns, he spent another two weeks in the hospital. Tiara recovered soon and was released from the hospital after two days. She and her grandmother went to visit Surrell. Seeing Surrell, Tiara's grandmother couldn't hold back her tears of gratitude. “Thank you, Surrell. Without your timely rescue, my granddaughter would have died in the fire.” She said, holding his hand tightly. “It's a small price to pay and it's my pleasure to do that. Tiaras is my angel.” Surrell held her hand, saying in a hoarse voice.
参2: Paragraph 1:
Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. He ran blindly in the blackness, and finally made it to the second floor, where he was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath. “Baby girl, where are you”
he cried desperately. All he could hear was the popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan emerged. He quickly crawled toward the sound. Finally, he touched something. A shoe, then an ankle. He pulled Tiara toward him and hugged her tight and said, “Uncle's got you.” The last thing he remembered, he was outside.
Paragraph 2:
Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later. Severe burns suffered and chronic obstructive pulmonary worsened, he spent another two weeks in the hospital. Tiara recovered soon and was released from the hospital after two days. She went to

a small price to pay,” Surrell said in a hoarse voice, “but I'd do it again in a heartbeat (=without thinking about it).
The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018. He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon. He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he should pick it up and throw it away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. A hand-drawn bow accompanied the word. Heiss flipped the paper over. On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!
Heiss was charmed. He suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a
Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, doll clothes and art supplies.
Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on , attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no results; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private message to Radio Xeny, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his search on the station’s page immediately. 注意:
