Write your answers on the answer sheet. Much work has been directed towards examining teacher-student interactions, and a number of instruments have been designed to analyze the pattern of interaction in the classroom. However, less attention has been paid to the kind of discourse that student-student interaction produces. This oversight needs to be addressed, since most ELT coursebooks do not deal with speaking by breaking it down into micro-skills work. Instead, they often have the vague aim of ‘promoting learner fluency’. (54) This article argues that direct instruction strategies can be applied to help learners develop speaking skills, and in particular to become aware of patterns of interaction. What has been largely overlooked is that practicing conversation also entails knowing how to use language to interact. (55) ‘Students’ success in two-way communication does not just depend on what they produce, but also on how effectively they are able to participate in conversational exchanges. We have come to recognize that conversation involves far more than knowledge of the language system and the factors creating coherence in one-way discourse; it involves the gaining, holding, and yielding of turns, the negotiation of meaning.

Act, Scene 4

(Outside a restaurant Henry looks at the envelope without opening it and decides to go in. He sits down at a table next to the front window.) OWNER: (Seeing Henry’s poor appearance) That one’s reserved. This way, please. (to the waiter) Take this gentleman’s order, Horace.

HENRY: (after sitting down and putting the letter on the table) I’d like some ham and eggs and a nice big steak. Make it extra thick. I’d also like a cup of coffee and a pineapple dessert.

WAITER: Right, sir. I’m afraid it’ll cost a large amount of money. HENRY: I understand. And I’ll have a large glass of beer.

WAITER: OK. (The waiter leaves and soon returns with all the food.) HOSTESS: My goodness! Why, look at him. He eats like a wolf. OWNER: We’ll see if he’s clever as a wolf, eh?

WAITER: (reading the bill after the meal) All right. That’s two orders of ham and eggs, two extra thick steaks, two large glasses of beer, two cups of coffee and two desserts.

HENRY: (looking at the clock on the wall) Would you mind waiting just a few minutes?

WAITER: (in a rude manner) What’s there to wait for? OWNER: All right, Horace. I’ll take care of this.

HENRY: (to owner) That was a wonderful meal. It’s amazing how much pleasure you get out of the simple thing in life, especially if you can’t have them for a while.

OWNER: Yes, very interesting. Now perhaps, sir, if you pay your bill I can help the other customers.

HENRY: (looking at the clock on the wall again) Well, I see it’s two o’clock. (he opens the envelope and holds a million pound bank note in his hands. Henry is surprised but the owner and waiter are shocked) I’m very sorry. But… I… I don’t have anything smaller.

Listening Section

Part I In this part, you will hear five short conversations. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked. Choose the best answer to each question, and then transfer your answer to the answer sheet. Both the conversation and the question will be read only once.

1. M: I haven’t seen you for ages. Where have you been?

W: In the hospital. I had an operation. I left the hospital ahead of time, and after a quick breakfast I have to stay here in the library to make up the missed lessons. Q: Where is the woman now?

2. W: You do look cold. What happened?

M: I’ve been standing outside in Arctic temperature for over an hour. Q: During what season of the year does the conversation mostly take place?

3. W: Bill, hello. How are you? You look taller and stronger than before. I remember

little Bill, the best student in the class. M: No, you were a better student than I was, but I remember a little girl with glasses.

You’re different, too. W: Let’s sit down and talk.

Q: What’s the probable relationship between the man and the woman?

4. W: You’re lucky to have got such a good position. How did you find it? Was it

advertised in the paper?

M: I looked and looked for months without finding anything. Then a friend told

me about this job. So I applied and got it. W: You are a lucky dog.

Q: How did the man find his job?

5. W: What a sunny day! The wind is blowing, too. I’m going to fly a kite. M: That’s a good idea. Go and fly a kite. W: Do you want to come with me?

M: I don’t know. It’s going to be cloudy, I think. Q: What do you think the man will do?

Part II

In this part, you will hear a conversation. Match the pictures with the people, and then transfer your answers to the answer sheet. The conversation will be read only once.

M: Hi, I’m Henry.

W: Hi, I’m Lily, nice to meet you. Where are you from, Henry? M: I’m from Canada. I’ve just moved here. W: Canada! Are you good at winter sports then?

M: Well, my brother Eric likes playing ice hockey. And in summer, we enjoy tennis

together. Actually I like mountain biking. W: Wow! That’s quite dangerous, isn’t it?

M: Not really, not if you’re careful. What do you do in your free time? W: I quite like playing tennis, too, with my sister, Lucy, and I love playing football. But Lucy is also very interested in singing and really loves the theatre—she wants to be an actress one day. Have you got any other hobbies?

M: Um, I guess I enjoy playing online computer games and meeting new people there. How about you? Do you spend much time online?

W: Well, I’m not keen on computer games, but I’ve got a MySpace page and I like chatting online with my friend Kate there. But she really prefers chatting face-to-face, especially at weekends. And she likes playing video games.

M: Really? Anyway it’s time for registration—and after that I’ll introduce you to some of my friends. W: All right then. Thank you.

Part III

In this part, you will hear a conversation. Fill in the blanks with the exact words or phrases you hear in the conversation, and then transfer your answers to the answer sheet. The conversation will be read only once.

Bruce: Hi, Jennie. Did you have a good time at Charlie’s last night? Jennie: Oh, hi, Bruce. No, it was terrible! I’m never going to that restaurant again! Bruce: Really? I’m surprised! I went there several times last year, and I always

had a lot of fun. I saw a couple of famous people there last time!

Jennie: Yeah, I know. I thought it was going to be really stylish and fashionable,

but I was so disappointed! We were the only people there. Can you believe it? There was no atmosphere at all. Bruce: And what about the food?

Jennie: Well, the soup was too salty and the chocolate dessert was bitter. And the

fish was covered in really horrible sauce. Bruce: Oh, dear!

Jennie: Yeah, it was disgusting! And the service was terrible too. There were plenty

of waiters but none of them wanted to serve us. They were really unfriendly and the food took hours to arrive.

Bruce: Oh dear. Plenty of things to complain about then?

Jennie: Yeah, I talked to the manager before we left, but he didn’t seem to care at all.

Part IV

In this part, you will hear a speech. Complete the summary of the speech with no more than three words, and then transfer your answers to the answer sheet. The speech

will be read only once.

W: Hello, children and parents. Thank you all for coming to this meeting. I’d like to start by confirming that we will receive some money from the government for our school trip to Indonesia.

We will receive approximately $ 1,300 per child, which will reduce the overall cost of you.

Now that we are sure to get the money, it is time to do some serious planning. We are sure that the trip will be very exciting for the children, especially if they have not traveled overseas before. There are many benefits to having some exposure to different places and cultures. Your children will be able to learn a lot about other people and cultures on this trip.

Leanne is with us tonight. Leanne, where are you? Put up your hand, Leanne, so that the people can see who you are. Thank you. Leanne went on the trip last year and will be happy to tell you of her experiences and answer any questions you might have. We will hear from her a bit later in the meeting.

We only have five months to organize the trip. From past experience I can tell you that this

time will go very quickly! So we need to start organizing the trip.

This is the end of listening section.
